How do i join Jiu Jitsu?
What do I need?
All you need is a t-shirt and tracksuit trousers, we train barefoot so no need for any special footwear. Our sessions are all open for new people regardless of previous experience or general fitness. Your first session is free and we'll even buy you a beer in the pub afterwards!
What will I do?
For your first session you will be given careful supervision on 'breakfalling' (which is our way of saying falling over without hurting yourself!) by a senior grade. When you are comfortable with falling over you'll be taught simple wrist releases and even simple throws which contain the essence of Jiu Jitsu. As you progress you'll be introduced to weapon disarms and more technically difficult throws. Don't worry about falling behind though as everything that is taught is done so ensuring that people can learn at their own pace. Of course if you get stuck with anything we're all lovely people so don't hesitate to ask!
That seems easy enough but which session should I start with?
Anyone is welcome to join in any of our sessions (or merely come and watch if you are still unsure!). Although the teaching differs for each session the structure remains largely unchanged and there will always be someone on hand to help. If you are unsure of where to go to find the rooms then you can usually find us waiting outside beforehand.
OK, so I want to come again, do I need anything else?
If you decide that you enjoyed yourself and want to come again then you will have to pay a monumental £2/ £3 Stu/ Non-Stu per session. Eventually you will need to purchase a 'Gi' (the white pyjama-like clothes). This will come with a white belt (beginner's grade) for the sum of £20 (this may sound like a lot but they last ages!) you will also need to pay £15 for membership to the Aiuchi association.
We are a not-for-profit organisation so the money you pay goes towards covering costs and drinks at the Christmas party etc. All our instructors do it for free, paid only by their student's smiles!
I still have questions who do I ask?
